The Direct Selling Association of the Philippines spiced up the second quarter of the year with a fully loaded General Membership Meeting held at the Columbus function room of Discovery Suites in Pasig City.
Anchoring on this year’s theme “Power Up for Maximum Performance,” DSAP Chairman & Max International Vice President for Asia Joey Sarmiento delivered his welcome remarks with emphasis on the importance for all attendees to join the DSAP in its unified commitment to excellence and to raise the bar in this industry.
“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more simply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”
According to Sarmiento, these words of the 28th US President Woodrow Wilson aptly describe what direct selling emerged to be. “With the life-changing business opportunities that the industry offers, we have enabled people to dream and want more for their families. Our industry has provided hope to those who want to be better versions of themselves. The direct selling business gave them hope and made them brave enough to see it happen.”
Sarmiento’s welcome remarks also included the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA) Global Business Results for 2018.
Here are some key results:
- Global estimated retail sales for 2018 were a record $192.9 billion, an increase of 1.2% over 2017.
- Compound annual growth rate for the period from 2015 through 2018 was 1.7%, showing sustained growth over time.
- The global force of independent direct selling representatives reached 118.4 million, up 1.6% over 2017.
- China ($35.7B) and the U.S. ($35.3B) tied for the top direct selling market. Rounding out the Top 10 markets were Korea, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, France, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Being the head of the Government Affairs Committee, Sarmiento also mentioned the committee’s current undertakings, which are the Special Law on Anti-Pyramiding and DTI-DSAP Memorandum of Understanding projects.
DSAP member companies learned about leadership in the midst of change from special guest speaker, Global Leadership and Learning Coach Ruby Palma. The speaker shared about the process a person undergoes when confronted with change. No matter how difficult the transition brought by change, she stressed on the importance of seeing change as an opportunity to bounce back, take action and achieve growth.
The DSAP GMM also became a venue for the member companies to learn the DSAP’s hashtag #ParaSureDapatDSAPMember by heart complete with hand gestures. This ice-breaker was led by program host Michelle Nopia of Sophie Paris and the hand gesture for the DSAP photo op were demonstrated by Salene Kwan of Qnet and Charisse España of Tradizione.
GMM’s second speaker was noted entrepreneur and business mentor Dean Pax Lapid. He discussed the importance of Power Up as a strategy for growth. “Success is the validation of your STRATEGY (Power Up). Being able to see that you as the leader (CEO) was able to build something greater than yourself. Knowing the vision and the future that you believe in has a greater chance of certainty,” said Lapid.
Guest speaker Mau San Andres of Wirecard presented how their customized prepaid card could help direct selling companies level up their payment process for customers, distributors and employees.
The 4-hour GMM also highlighted the induction of the newest DSAP member company, Enagic Philippines, Inc., represented by Branch Manager Asato Matsumoto.
DSAP Committee Heads provided updates for all the member companies during the last part of the program. Education Committee Head Atty. Errol Palaci of Avon shared the orient and align initiatives that the committee has done to help achieve the objectives for the DTI-DSAP Negosyo Center Projects. He also updated the member companies regarding the creation of the DSAP Taskforce on Unauthorized Online Selling and the results of the initial meeting with the members.
